How to find a good local tradesperson in Derby and Nottingham
Asking on Facebook and hoping for the best? Here’s a simple way to find a reliable local tradesperson in Derby and Nottingham, and the checks worth doing before you book.

We've all been there. The boiler packs in, the garden's a jungle or the bathroom finally needs doing, and you have no idea who to call. So you post in a local Facebook group, get forty comments, three of them say "my cousin does that", and you're no closer to an answer.
Finding a good local tradesperson shouldn't be that hard. Here's how to do it properly, and the checks that save you a headache later.
1. Start local
A business based near you is easier to book, quicker to come back if something needs sorting, and more likely to care about its reputation in the area. Word of mouth travels fast in Derby and Nottingham, and good local trades know it.
On Connect Me With you put in your postcode and only see businesses that actually cover your area, from Derby and Long Eaton to Beeston, Ilkeston and Nottingham itself. No scrolling past someone 60 miles away.
2. Read the reviews (properly)
Star ratings are a good start, but read what people actually say:
- Is it recent? A review from last month tells you more than one from five years ago.
- Is it specific? "Fitted our new kitchen, turned up on time every day and left it spotless" is worth ten "great job!" reviews.
- How do they handle problems? A business that replies politely to a less happy customer is often a safe bet.
3. Check the right qualifications
Some jobs legally need a registered tradesperson. It only takes a minute to check:
- Gas work (boilers, gas fires, cookers): the engineer must be on the Gas Safe Register. Ask to see their ID card, or check their number on the Gas Safe website.
- Electrical work: look for electricians registered with a scheme like NICEIC or NAPIT, so the work can be certified and signed off.
For most other jobs, like painting, cleaning, gardening or dog walking, there's no compulsory register. That's when reviews, photos of past work and a proper conversation matter most.
4. Look at their work
Good tradespeople are proud of what they do and happy to show it. Photos of real jobs tell you far more than a slick logo. Every listing on Connect Me With has space for work photos, so you can see the finish before you pick up the phone.
5. Be careful with big deposits
It's normal to pay a deposit for materials on a large job. Be wary of anyone asking for most of the money up front, cash only, or pushing you to decide on the spot. A genuine local business won't mind you taking a day to think about it.
The easy way to do all this
We built Connect Me With because finding someone good shouldn't mean trawling Facebook and crossing your fingers. Every business is a real local business, and you can:
- Search by what you need and your postcode
- See how far they travel and how soon they're free
- Read reviews from local customers and see photos of their work
- Message them through the site or on WhatsApp in a couple of taps
It's free to use, and you deal with the business directly.
